Chairman’s Statement

A better sense of corporate responsibility

We are proud of what we have achieved with our communities and our continuing work to tackle environmental issues. We always strive to improve and 2007 was no exception.

Earlier this year Gordon Brown and I visited Lauriston Primary School in Hackney to see the successful Every Child a Reader programme in action. Many pupils have accelerated their reading levels by as much as four times through this programme, which the KPMG Foundation helped launch.

On the back of this success we are now working closely with the Department for Children, Schools and Families and other private and voluntary sector organisations, to launch a similar numeracy scheme, Every Child Counts.

Our staff and partners continue to be generous with their time and their money. During the year we invested £5.7 million in our communities, including contributing 38,000 hours through our well established volunteering programmes in which 35% of our staff participated.

The climate is a key issue for us. We are active participants in the Prince’s Rainforest Project, launched by the Prince of Wales, and are supporting practical measures that we, and people businesses like ours, can take to reduce our carbon emissions. The single greatest challenge here is reducing our carbon footprint, and helping clients to do the same, whilst increasing efficiency.
