Our Approach to CSR

KPMG CSR Image 1KPMG is committed to its communities; our CSR agenda is to inspire, challenge and empower our people to make a positive contribution to local communities and the environment. We are committed to integrating CSR and sustainability into all we do – from the advice we provide clients, to being a great place to work, investing in our local communities, minimising our environmental impacts and working closely with our suppliers.

Really effective CSR – work that makes a difference inside and outside the business– requires strong leadership. So in 2006 we established our first CSR Leadership Team, headed by Dr Ashley Steel a member of the Board of KPMG Europe. The leadership group defines our CSR strategy, makes sure our performance is measured more rigorously and report back regularly to the main Board. Our priorities are to integrate CSR into the business and help KPMG people understand fully why CSR is important.

An important objective of the firm is to develop closer relationships with clients, suppliers and people, to help embed CSR into the way of life at KPMG. Our work was recognised in 2007 when we were short listed for an Environmental Leadership Award from Business in the Community for successfully integrating environmental strategy into the business.

A new code of conduct for suppliers, due to be launched in 2008, will help us spread best practice even further by ensuring that all major KPMG Europe LLP suppliers meet high environmental, community and employment standards.

Ashley SteelAlmost 35,000 children leave primary school with very low literacy skills. This year I saw the results of the KPMG Foundation’s Every Child a Reader programme for myself. Through this programme, highly skilled Reading Recovery teachers are helping 5,000 children to develop better reading skills. We’re delighted to be playing a central role in addressing such a vital issue.”

KPMG CSR Image 2Benchmarking and measuring our performance
We have a policy of actively seeking opportunities to benchmark our performance, examining the impact we have on our key stakeholders and benchmarking ourselves against our peers. This helps to drive improvements across the firm. Measuring and monitoring our environmental and community performance is a key part of this - ensuring that we are continually making a positive contribution to society and reporting our progress in an open and transparent way.

Supporting our people
Community and environmental projects are an exciting way for our people to broaden their skills. KPMG the UK firm provides the following opportunities:

- Everyone has 3.5 hours of firm time each month to volunteer.
- We have donation budgets to support volunteering.
- We run a Give As You Earn Scheme, with all donations made to our Staff Selected Charity, matched pound for pound up to the value of £100,000.
- Each of our offices has a CSR forum which decides its local priorities within a clearly defined national framework.

We continue to be committed to giving at least one percent of our relevant profits to the community and use the London Benchmarking Group model to assess our total community contributions. Our application of the model is independently assured by the Corporate Citizenship Company.
