Community CSR
| 35% of our people
volunteered in 2007,
contributing 38,000
hours to
communities. |
Investing in our communities
KPMG
in the UK’s commitment to
communities is at the heart of
our Values.
Volunteering schemes and community
projects which focus on
employability and access to opportunity,
and environmental
management are the foundation
of our commitment to communities;
these have, over the years, matured
into an integrated programme
aimed at building sustainable
communities. We strive to inspire,
challenge and empower our people
to contribute positively to local
communities and the environment,
helping to create a substantial
business future for us all.
All our
people can access 3.5hours of firm
time per month to volunteer in and
each of our UK offices has a CSR
Forum – a group
of people from all grades of
the business who are
interested in CSR – who help
implement the national CSR strategy
and respond to local
priorities, building strong partnerships
with local community organisations.

There
are two strands to our community
involvement activity; community
investment programmes which focus
on employee volunteering, and a programme
of charitable giving.
Community investment
programmes
We are helping children get a better
education.
With finance and support
from KPMG, the City of London
KPMG Academy will open its doors
in 2009. This will be a mixed
and non-denominational school,
with around 170 11-year-olds
due to join in its first year.
We have committed over £1 million
and many hours of our time to
the school. Environmental lessons
from the construction of our
new London headquarters are
being applied to the building
of the school. – a ground source
heat pump may be used to
provide part of the Academy’s
energy, for example.
We also support a range of other
projects designed to improve
education for children and
young adults. Most notably these
include the KPMG Foundation’s
Every Child a Reader and
Every Child Counts schemes, and
many other examples of literacy
and numeracy support
work in schools. KPMG

and corporate
responsibility projects enable
us to make a difference to
the
wider world while learning
more, broadening our
experiences and stretching
ourselves further. |
We are supporting disadvantaged
groups and communities back into
the workplace.
Our
employability programmes aim to address
some of the inequalities that exist
between the least advantaged groups
and communities and the rest of society
by closing the opportunity
gap and ensuring that support
reaches those who need it most.
Our programmes include
mentoring young entrepreneurs
through The Prince’s Trust Business
Start-up programme as
well as supporting ex-homeless
people and refugees back into
work through providing CV
and interview skills coaching
sessions.
A
focus on conservation and sustainability
We are committed to enabling
our people to actively contribute
to our programme of environmental
management. We have established
local volunteering relationships
with community organisations
which enable practical, hands
on involvement, whilst we are
working closely with our staff
charity Help the Hospices to
reduce the carbon footprint of
the UK’s
200+ hospices through energy
audits delivered by KPMG volunteers.
We
are committed to ensuring that
our CSR programmes remain relevant
and deliver value to our communities
and the business. During 2008 we will
be rolling out a new focus on
volunteering following a strategic
review of our activities with
the view to increasing the
volunteering experience for all
involved.
