| Professional Development – UK ACI events
The professional development of non-executive directors is becoming an area of increased importance and focus as corporate governance evolves. In response to the recent financial crisis the Walker Review has now issued its final recommendations for the governance of banks and the Financial Reporting Council has also issued its proposed changes to what is now called ‘The UK Corporate Governance Code which emphasises the ever increasing need for non-executive directors to keep up to date to ensure that they discharge their duties effectively.
This message is also reflected in the revised Combined Code. The code recommends that all directors should regularly update and refresh their skills and knowledge. One of the related supporting principles states the following:

"The chairman should ensure that the directors continually update their skills and knowledge and familiarity with the company required to fulfil their role both on the board and on board committees.
