The UK printing market was tough before the recession but problems for operators in the sector have become more acute during the economic downturn. With most traditional printers struggling to keep expensive web offset and sheet-fed lithographic (litho) press equipment fully utilised, there has been a race to the bottom in terms of pricing, leading to many litho printers operating at a marginal loss. At a strategic level some of these printers are looking to diversify into commercial activities which yield superior returns, moving towards value-added service delivery and away from the increasingly commoditised business of putting ink on paper.

The UK News Publishing Sector
Unfolding the current position
With the knowledge that no national newspaper has increased circulation over the past two years, it is easy to assume that the future is less than rosy for the news publishing sector. And the destiny of the news media industry as it finds its way in the online arena while maintaining its cash-generative printing operations is far from certain. However, although a single successful model of digital news provision has yet to emerge, some of the pieces of that jigsaw are no doubt already in place, and while the volumes and values of traditional print media income will probably continue to contract, other revenue models are emerging to replace them.
